Conclusion
According to Mobley, the USS North Carolina was “considered the most powerful warship afloat” (USS North Carolina, Mobley). She endured many battles during World War II and played a very important part in the United States Navy during the war. World War II not only affected the lives of Americans but it affected countries all over the world, and the USS North Carolina was a part of that. Between battles won and lost, living conditions on the ship, correlation with its sister ship the USS Washington, and the Save our Ship campaign, the North Carolina Battleship has inspired many.
I enjoyed visiting the Battleship especially as a child and it is a great way to teach not only children but adults as well about World War II and what importance the ship made in the lives of many. The North Carolina Battleship has remained a war memorial for the North Carolinian's who fought in World War II for the past 50 years.
The memorial brings aspects of World War II alive and tourist are able to visit the different compartments on the ship where the crew members ate, slept, worked, and formed close bonds with other members on board the ship. Seeing the USS North Carolina for yourself helps bring a new perspective of war and battleships to your own life because you are able to witness these things first hand. It does a superior job honoring the men and women who fought during World War II and it is a great way to learn the history not only of World War II but aspects of North Carolina as well. It not only had a lasting impact during the war in the 1930's and 1940's but it has made lasting impressions today in the lives of many who have visited her as well as the city of Wilmington, North Carolina. “Although she will never sail again, she will endure for hundreds of years, not only as an authentic World War II battleship, but also as a symbol of courage and sacrifice that will inspire generations of Americans yet to come” (B. Blee, p.1).
