Reflection
I think it is interesting how the Battleship is used today because it provides a lot of opportunities for people to learn about the ship itself and WWII. They perform “Battleship Alive” weekends that bring the Battleship to life which is very interesting because you can see how the Ship functioned in WWII. I also think that it is very significant that the Battleship holds annual reunions for crew members who served on the Battleship during World War II. I learned a lot about the North Carolina Battleship and I believe that it is very significant how it is used to honor those who fought in during the war. People of that time viewed the Battleship as being sacred and superior to any other war weapon or ship. It survived many battles during World War II including those in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor.
The North Carolina Battleship will be of value to me as an elementary teacher of Social Studies because it is important that students know what is available to them in their own backyard. Students can develop a cultural perspective of a historical site in North Carolina. The Battleship provides field trip groups with a special rate and group tours. It would be a great experience if I could actually take students to the Battleship and live out the experience with them. If I cannot do this I can use what I have learned from visiting the Battleship to recreate the Battleship in my own classroom for students so they can learn by using a hands-on approach. Using the North Carolina Battleship I will be able to get students excited about learning about World War II. Too many students are not interested history or war therefore using real world examples will be a great tool to use to get students interested. It will be something that they can actually relate to because it is available to go see at the present time. Online on the North Carolina Battleship site, free lesson plans and other tools are available to implement in the classroom. Lesson plans are available for Social Studies and integration for other subject areas. Overall, I feel that the USS North Carolina is of great value to me as a future social studies teacher and as a resident of North Carolina because of how it is preserved. It brings this era to life and upon visiting the ship tourist are able to learn exactly how life really was during World War II and on the ship itself. They are able to distinguish what exactly the ship was used for in World War II and they can also see the effects it has today on the people of North Carolina and the city of Wilmington.
The content connects with the National and State Standards because the North Carolina Battleship is an important historical monument and museum that is located here in North Carolina. The Essential Standard is:

4.H.2.1 Explain why important buildings, statues, monuments and place names are associated with the state's history.
